Health Benefits of Camel Milk for Pets

For thousands of years humans have benefited from the healing properties of camel milk.  Now it seems that animals are deriving benefits from the milk as well.  A 2009 study in Tunisia demonstrated the anti-diabetic effect of camel milk on diabetic dogs.  A group of diabetic dogs was given 500 ml of raw camel milk daily.  The study concluded that the dogs had a significant and lasting decrease in blood glucose levels as well as a decrease in cholesterol levels within a 3 week time period.  (A. Dog breeders testify that puppies in litters supplemented with camel milk “simply thrive” on the milk, compared to puppies on traditional puppy formula.  Underweight puppies gained a pound or more per week with none of the side effects such as diarrhea seen with administering cow milk.  (Animal Wellness Dec./Jan. 2012)

A study with mice utilizing camel milk antibodies’ ability to attack cancerous cells proved 100% effective without any side effects.  The lactoferrin in camel milk (10 times higher than cow’s milk) has proved beneficial in the treatment of certain types of cancer in mice.  (University World News; Camel’s Milk for Treating Cancer: January 2011)
